This is a Victorian helmet belonging to an officer of the 9th Lancashire Artillery Volunteers. Although the helmet itself has no unit markings, it was part of a complete uniform set named to J F Musgrave. Jonathan F. Musgrave was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 9th Lancashire Artillery Volunteers, Bolton Position Artillery, on May 16, 1900. The unit was re-designated the 9th Lancashire Royal Garrison Artillery, Bolton Heavy Artillery, in 1902. Musgrave was promoted to Lieutenant on March 19, 1904. Following the formation of the Territorial Force in 1908, the unit was re-designated the 3rd East Lancashire Brigade, Royal Field Artillery Territorial Force. Musgrave's trail ends here in 1909.
